Norfolk Southern makes operations appointments

Norfolk Southern makes operations appointments    Norfolk Southern Corp., parent of Norfolk Southern Railway Co., has appointed Gerhard A. Thelen as vice president of operations planning and support.
   Thelen joined Norfolk Southern in 1977 and was most recently vice president mechanical. Located at the corporation’s headquarters in Norfolk, Thelen is now responsible for operations planning, policies, budgets, research and tests and quality management functions.
   Taking over from Thelen as vice president mechanical, with responsibilities for the maintenance and repair of the railroad’s motive power and rolling stock, is Tim A. Heilig, who will be based in Atlanta.
   Heilig was Norfolk Southern’s assistant vice president transportation network.
