Northwest Airlines eyes more China freight

Northwest Airlines is engaged in exploratory talks about expanding cargo service to China, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Northwest Airlines Cargo operates three freighters per week to China, but is interested in gaining additional business made possible by the continuing growth in Chinese exports, the paper quoted president Doug Steenland as saying at a Deutsche Bank Securities Transportation Conference in Naples, Fla.

The airline also plans to join the SkyTeam alliance, which allows passengers to make connections with partner airlines such as Delta, Air France, Alitalia and Korean Air.
