Northwest exits bankruptcy
Northwest Airlines emerged Thursday from 20 months of bankruptcy protection as a smaller, lower-cost airline after a large restructuring.
Northwest is one of the largest cargo carriers among U.S. passenger airlines. It has its own fleet of 747 cargo planes, predominantly used on international routes serving Asia.
The last step towards meeting its goals occurred this week when flight attendants ratified a new contract that reduces Northwest's labor costs. Negotiations with many unions for concessions were acrimonious.
