Norway to construct world’s first ship tunnel

Stretching between Bergen and Aalesund, the tunnel will provide safe passage for freight and tourist ships.    After a century of deliberation, Norway has given the green light to build the world’s first ship tunnel.
   The 1.7-km tunnel will cost an estimated $319 million and will take a decade to construct, Splash 24/7 reported.
   Stretching from the Norwegian Sea to the North Sea along Norway’s west coast, the tunnel will allow for year-round safe passage of freight and tourist ships between Bergen and Alesund. Currently, ships must sail around the Stad peninsula, a route known for its treacherous seas.
   The tunnel, which will be built under a 645-meter mountain, will be 45 meters high and 36 meters wide in order to accommodate ships with a draft of 12 meters.
