Norwegian fleet sees uptick in tonnage

The Norwegian-owned, foreign-going fleet, measured in deadweight tons, increased 1 percent in the second quarter to 39.1 million dwt. The fleet comprises 1,697 ships registered under the traditional Norwegian Registry, the Norwegian International Registry, or other flags.

The Norwegian Shipowners Association, said the uptick in the last quarter is counter to a long term decline that has seen the size of its foreign-owned fleet drop from 50.1 million dwt at the beginning of 2000 when the fleet had 1,660 vessels.

The association said in its quarterly report: “There has been an increased concentration on offshore service vessels, and this trend continued during the second quarter of 2006 with an increase of nine ships.”
