NYK gets time charter contract with European power supplier giant Enel

NYK Line’s wholly owned subsidiary, NYK Bulkship (Europe) Ltd. has entered into a 10-year time-charter contract with Italy’s largest power supplier, Enel S.p.A., for the use of two 90,000-ton post-Panamax carriers.

It is the first long-term charter contract that the Japanese NYK Group has secured with a European power supplier.

The ships, being built by Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., will start operation upon the opening of Enel’s new thermal power plants across Europe by 2010.

“Because crude oil prices continue to soar, power suppliers around the world are paying attention to power generation using coal, whose reserves are abundant and more economical than oil. Thus, coal transport is expected to continue to increase in the future,” NYK said in a statement.
