NYK, Maersk join on environmental initiatives

NYK, Maersk join on environmental initiatives    NYK Line said Thursday it plans to collaborate with fellow carrier Maersk Line on environmental technologies.
   The lines will share ideas on emission-reduction technologies 'to enable more cost-effective solutions and more efficient implementation of measures required to reduce CO2, NOx and SOx emissions and other environmental impacts.'
   Also included in the collaboration will be classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV) to give perspective and competence on technology solutions and risk management, NYK said.
   Specifically, the companies will exchange ideas covering:
   ' Waste-heat recovery.
   ' Air lubrication, which reduces the friction between a vessel's hull and seawater.
   ' Emission-abatement technologies, including emission-cleaning systems, and systems for operations using low-sulfur fuel.
   ' Systems for ballast-water treatment.
   ' Alternative fuels, including LNG and fuel cells, as a replacement for heavy fuel oil.
   ' Vessel operation measures, including super-slow steaming.
