The vessel will be used as a replacement for the aging and smaller “Sanyo Maru,” which transports coal primarily from Australia and Indonesia to Chugoku Electric Power Co.’s Misumi Power Station in Japan.
NYK operates 30 coal carriers and plans to add more broad-type bulk ships to its fleet “because these vessels have the ability to not only enter ports with limited water depths but also carry about 20,000 tons more per voyage than Panamax vessels in the 70,000-deadweight-ton class,” the Japanese carrier said.
