The vessel, 'NYK Vega,' built at HHI's Ulsan shipyard, is the largest containership in NYK's fleet and will be deployed on the Grand Alliance's Asia/Europe EU4 loop.
The Japanese shipping company has another four same-size ships on order from IHI Marine United Inc. All eight of the vessels are scheduled to be operational on the Grand Alliance Asia/Europe services by early 2008.
The ships are also designed with a number of environmentally friendly features including electronically controlled engines designed to save on fuel by controlling the timing of fuel injection and the opening and shutting of exhaust valves. Also, the vessels are designed with fuel tanks inside the bulkheads to reduce the risk of fuel leakage in the event of an accident. The ships are also compatible with land-based electric facilities rather than from onboard electric generators that run while the ship is anchored, reducing emissions.
