NYK uses solar cells in Port of Tokyo

NYK uses solar cells in Port of Tokyo    NYK said it is using a new type of advanced solar cell at the Port of Tokyo’s Ohi Container Terminal.

Installed solar cells will provide about 1 percent of the electric power consumed at NYK's Tokyo terminal.

   Solar panels have been installed at Berths 6 and 7, which NYK leases from the Tokyo Port Terminal Corp. for joint operations with subsidiary companies. After the installation of more than 1,500 panels, the annual generating capacity will be about 130,000 kilowatt hours, or about 1 percent of the electric power consumed annually at the terminal.
   NYK said installation uses CIS solar cells that contain copper, indium and selenium and are drawing attention as next-generation solar cells because they do not contain silicon, which is in short supply due to excessive demand. The CIS solar cell belongs to the class with the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency among thin-film-type solar cells.
