NYK wins BHP Billiton long-term deal

NYK Line said Wednesday it has cemented a 12-year contract with mining giant BHP Billiton to transport iron ore from western Australia to China.

It's the first long-term deal between the Japanese line and Australia-based BHP, one of the world's biggest mining companies. Shipments will begin from 2013 using a 250,000-deadweight-ton ore carrier. Annual volume is expected to be about 2.7 million tons.

NYK said that in addition to the 12-year contract, a three-year contract with BHP for a 200,000-dwt-class Capesize bulker was started from April.
