NYU holding freight conference

NYU holding freight conference Freight movement in the New York metropolitan area will be explored
June 6 at a conference sponsored by the Wagner Rudin Center for Transportation Policy and Management at New York University.
   Astrid Glynn, commissioner of the New York State Department of
Transportation will give the keynote address at the event, entitled “Delivering the Goods: The Freight Needs of a Growing Population.”
   Organizers note that the region’s population is expected to grow by 2 million in the next 25 years, and boost freight volumes. They cite a recent report by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council that projects that by 2025 regional movements of petroleum-coal products are expected to hit 100 million tons, up from 86 million tons in 1998. Food-kindred products are projected to reach 70 million tons, up from 56 million tons.
   With most freight moved by truck at some point “the potential negative impacts on traffic congestion, air quality, and infrastructure are also clear,” organizers said.
   Other planned speakers include: Mark Pisano, executive director of the Southern California Association of Governments; Anthony Shorris, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; Robert Paaswell, director of the Region 2 University Transportation Research Center; Robert Yaro, president of the Regional Plan Association; James Devine, president of New York Container Terminal;
Robert Caton, vice president of airport facilities group at AMB Property; and Alice Cheng, vice president at the New York City Economic Development Corp.
