Offshore natural gas port approaching another milestone

Offshore natural gas port approaching another milestone

A proposed 'offshore port' planned for handling natural gas shipments 10 miles off the coast from Port Everglades is expected to reach another milestone this week with the December 21 closing of public comments to the Department of Transportation.

Houston-based Suez Energy North America in November received U.S. Coast Guard approval for its application. Through its subsidiary Calypso LNG, the company hopes to build a floating offshore port for handling natural gas.

That would include a marine floating buoy and anchoring system that would be 150 feet below the ocean surface when not in use.

The company has plans for a similar project off the coast of Massachusetts.
