Old Dominion opens Birmingham drayage center

   Old Dominion Freight Line on Monday opened a new container drayage facility to serve rail heads, container yards and ports in the Birmingham, Ala. area.
   The Birmingham center is the third container drayage facility for Old Dominion in Alabama and offers pick-up and delivery to any point in the continental United States.
   “Co-located with our Birmingham Service Center, the new site will strengthen our network in Alabama, which includes container drayage facilities in Huntsville and Mobile,” said Wayne Bersch, the carrier’s director of container operations. “The facility will allow Old Dominion to expand coverage in the Southeast. The site will also help us meet growing demand from customers who ship domestically and globally.”
   OD said its container drayage division grew 21.5 percent in 2012 and 19 percent in 2011 in terms of shipments.
   The carrier, whose primary business is less-than-truckload, has been operating a container drayage division since the early 1960s and with direct service to 17 U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Memphis, Tenn., Norfolk, Wilmington, Charlotte, Greensboro, Charleston, Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville. – Eric Johnson
