Oman carrier to start Red Sea/Med feeder

State-backed Oman Shipping Co. will reportedly start its first container service in late December, a loop connecting Red Sea and Mediterranean ports.

The service will use a 1,000-TEU ship with a rotation of Muscat, Port Said, Beirut, Lattakia, Mersin and Tripoli. It is due to start Dec. 26.

In the last decade Oman's government joined with Oman Oil to resurrect the nation's shipping industry. OSC primarily provides transportation for oil and gas products.

Oman is home to the transshipment port of Salalah (a key Middle East hub for Maersk Line), but the capital Muscat has larger potential for import/export cargo.
