OMI ORDERS TWO PRODUCT CARRIERS

OMI Corp. has ordered two 69,000-deadweight-ton product carriers from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. in South Korea.

OMI has also exercised an option for the construction of a 47,000-deadweight-ton product tanker by Onomichi Dockyard Co. in Japan.

OMI chairman Craig H. Stevenson said the Daewoo yard offered berths for delivery of the two carriers “well ahead of what could be obtained otherwise.”

Stevenson expects a “high demand for the vessels in both the charter and spot markets.”

“The product tanker market has remained strong through the traditionally weak season and we believe it will continue that strength due to lack of refinery capacity in high consumption nations,” Stevenson said. “We have been taking advantage of this by growing the product tanker fleet and securing revenue at excellent rates.”
