Ontario to weigh biodiesel mandate

   The Ontario Ministry of Environment has proposed a rule that would require trucks to run on diesel blend that included 2-percent biodiesel starting April 1. In 2016, the mandate would increase to a 4 percent blend of fuel made from algae, canola, yellow grease and other sources.
   Aviation fuel is not covered by the rule, but all diesel fuel and home heating oil would be subject to the new regulations.
   Northern Ontario would be exempt from the rule until 2016 because of poor infrastructure, according to the agency.
   “The proposed approach is designed to increase the amount of greener diesel fuel that is used in Ontario,” the agency wrote in its proposal. “This will contribute to Ontario’s commitment to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
   A public comment period is open until Dec. 16. According to the ministry, discussions with industry stakeholders have been going on since July.
