OOCL orders another two 8,000-TEU ships

Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas Container Line has ordered another two 8,063-TEU “SX class” vessels from Samsung Heavy Industries, for delivery in 2007.

This brings the total number of such vessels ordered with Samsung to 12. In July, OOCL extended its series of    8,063-TEU containerships from eight to 10 by ordering two additional ships of this type.

The “OOCL Shenzhen” and “OOCL Long Beach,” the first two ships in the series, were delivered early this year. The 8,063-TEU vessels are 323 meters long and have a deadweight of 100,000 tons.

OOCL said that its “SX class” and “S class” (5,000 TEUs) of post-Panamax vessels will form the backbone of its    fleet.
