Operations restricted on Hawaii big island, “fairly normal” elsewhere

   One day after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck on the Hawaiian islands, critical truck deliveries on Oahu and Maui are operating on a “fairly normal” basis, according to Kane McEwen, general manager at DHX-Dependable Hawaiian Express, an ocean and air freight company, from his offices in Honolulu.
   In a statement, McEwen reported that all DHX trucks, fanning out from the company’s base at Honolulu’s harbor to all points on Oahu, are operating “on or very close to schedules.” A similar situation exists on Maui for trucking operations on that island. He also stated that unloading supplies from container ships that have arrived in Honolulu also are proceeding on a scheduled basis.
   The situation on the Big Island, epicenter of the quake, is more complicated. Port facilities at Matson Lines on the Kona side were closed Monday for inspection, while the trucking offices of DHX-Big Island Inc., were also closed for inspection and clean-up.
   Horizon Lines and Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin Inc., parent company of Matson Navigation, both said they experienced minimal disruptions to their operations after Sunday’s earthquake that struck the Big Island of Hawaii.
   DHX trucks were operating on the Big Island and are being dispatched from a call forward cell phone outside its Kona office.
   “Trucking operations today (Monday) will be handled only by customer requests,” McEwen said.
   “Normal operations should begin tomorrow (Tuesday),” said Robert Richardson, local manager of the trucking company.
