Outgoing U.S. health secretary: Food imports vulnerable to terrorism The Bush administration’s outgoing Health and Human Services secretary warned the country’s system of for food imports remains vulnerable to terrorist attack.
   “For the life of me, I cannot understand why the terrorists have not attacked our food supply because it is so easy to do,” said Tommy Thompson, secretary of Health and Human Services, when he announced his resignation Friday, according to the Associated Press. “We are importing a lot of food from the Middle East, and it would be easy to tamper with that.”
   The next day, according to the AP, President Bush downplayed Thompson’s remarks in response to questions from reporters.
   “We’re a large country, with all kinds of avenues where somebody could inflict harm,” Bush said. “We’ve made a lot of progress in protecting our country, and there’s more work to be done, and this administration is committed to doing it.”
