Padilla takes reins at U.S. International Trade Administration The U.S. Senate has approved Christopher A. Padilla to serve as the Commerce Department's undersecretary for international trade.
   The Senate confirmed the appointment on Dec. 20.
   Padilla will lead the International Trade Administration, which participates in the development of U.S. trade policy, identifies and resolves market access and compliance issues, administers U.S. trade laws, and undertakes a range of trade promotion and trade advocacy efforts. The agency consists of more than 2,000 staff posted at U.S. embassies and commercial offices throughout the world.
   Prior to this appointment, Padilla served as the Commerce Department's assistance secretary for export administration, where he oversaw the country's export controls on items restricted for national security reasons, and for compliance with international treaties governing chemical and biological weapons.
   He also previously served as chief of staff and senior advisor to the deputy secretary of state, and assistance U.S. trade representative for international affairs and public liaison.
