Panama Canal Authority christens massive barge

The Panama Canal Authority Wednesday held a christening ceremony for a massive new drill barge that will be used for dredging projects in the canal.

The new barge, the “Bar',” is equipped with four drilling rigs that can bore holes up to 30 meters in a single pass. Drilled holes are filled with explosives, which are detonated to fracture rock meant to be removed to deepen or widen ship channels. The blasted material is removed by separate floating equipment.
