Panama Canal Authority outlines environmental program

The Panama Canal Authority, in what it is describing as a groundbreaking activity, says it is implementing a sustainable development program for the eastern region of the Panama Canal watershed.

The ACP has started demonstration projects at 45 locations in the region. The sites are divided into three sub-watersheds where environmental 'best practices' can be determined and later replicated in other sub-watersheds.

Projects include sustainable agriculture for soil and water conservation, reforestation, establishment and management of water and sanitation facilities, promotion of clean production, and organizational strengthening of local entities that oversee those activities.
