Panama Canal sees more traffic

Panama Canal sees more traffic

Panama Canal Authority said 3,590 ships transited the waterway in the three months ending Dec. 31, 2 percent more than in the same 2008 period.

Transits of supers, larger ships that require greater time and navigation skills, increased 8.1 percent to 2,026 transits.

Despite the increase in traffic, the average time it takes a vessel to transit the canal (including waiting time for passage) decreased 27.5 percent, to 20.29 hours for all ships and 20.7 percent to 13.43 hours for ships with reservations.
