Panama holds large conference on Canal The Panama Canal Authority Sunday completed a three-day informational conference on canal expansion plans that attracted more than 600 representatives from 222 companies and 34 countries.
   The sessions included presentations from ACP officials on the design and construction of new locks, as well as dredging, excavations and contracting processes.
   Jorge Quijano, ACP maritime operations director announced at the conference that the tender for the new set of locks design and construction contract will likely be let during the third quarter, and would call under a single contract.
   “This is a fundamental project of global importance,' said Alberto Alem'n Zubieta, ACP administrator and chief executive officer. 'Expansion will change the way in which the world trades, increase the advantages of the route and reaffirm our commitment to the interoceanic waterway.'
