Panamanian ports see container traffic jump

Panama Maritime Authority Administrator Fernando Solorzano said containerized cargo moving through Panamanian ports grew 32 percent to 4 million TEUs in 2007.

Solorzano attributed the growth to terminal expansion and the success of the ports in acquiring transshipment business.

Colon Container Terminal throughput grew 14.9 percent to 705,252 TEUs. Panama Ports Co. Balboa cargo increased 85.5 percent to 1.83 million TEUs. Panama Ports Cristobal throughput increased 106.2 percent to 166,641 TEUs. However, the Manzanillo International Terminal saw volume decrease 3.9 percent to 1.28 million TEUs.
