Payne has been the company's executive vice president and chief operating office the past two years, having joined NYK in 1989. Payne will replace Tomoo Kitayama, who was appointed president in 2009 but will become general manager of NYK Line's environmental group in Tokyo.
Replacing Payne will be Shinji Umehara, who moved from Nippon Cargo Airlines Co.
