Port Canaveral dredging pit for hurricane season Port Canaveral is dredging a pit that will trap sand during the coming hurricane season as a way to prevent shoaling in the shipping channel.
   The port started planning the project after experiencing shoaling during the 2004 hurricane season. The sand buildup shut down the ship channel and affected waterside operations at the port, officials said.
   The dredging project, which will be completed in time for the beginning of the hurricane season in June, cost $1.9 million.
   In addition, the port announced it will hold a briefing with local companies Tuesday, May 29 to review port protocols for the coming season. The meeting will start at 9 a.m. at the Port Canaveral Maritime Center commission chambers, 445 Challenger Road, on the south side of the port.
   The session will include officials from the port, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Cape Canaveral Fire Department, and the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.
