Port Canaveral foresees 90-day window on TWIC

Port Canaveral foresees 90-day window on TWIC Nearly 12,000 Port Canaveral badged workers will begin converting to the new federal Transportation Workers Identification Credential program Jan. 17.
The new TWIC cards are designed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration to improve security at U.S. ports of entry, primarily through the use of biometric, or fingerprint identification for workers.
'We have been given a 90-day window before TWIC enforcement begins,' Stan Payne, Port Canaveral's chief executive officer, said today. 'Since we have between 11,000 and 12,000 current badge holders at Port Canaveral, we had to begin preparing our employees, tenants and other port workers months ago to make this transition.'
The port's TWIC enrollment center, located at 707 Mullett Rd., suites 117-118, will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting Jan. 17 Workers required to obtain TWIC cards need to pre-enroll online at www.tsa.gov/twic    or call (866) 347-8942. Enrollment center appointments will only be given to applicants that have pre-enrolled.
The card will cost $132.50 and will be valid for five years.
Port Canaveral is the second Florida port to participate in the program, along with the Port of Jacksonville.
