Port Everglades nears 1 million-TEU mark

Port Everglades saw its container volumes near the 1 million TEU mark for its fiscal year ended Sept. 30.

The port handled 948,000 TEUs, up 18 percent from the previous fiscal year, according to preliminary figures from Phillip C. Allen, Port Everglades' director. Last fiscal year the port handled 797,238 TEUs.

New services are coming on board as the port's new fiscal year starts, including the addition of a CMA CGM service this week, and another Caribbean island service expected to be announced in the near future, Allen said.

Although figures for all the ports are not yet available, Port Everglades could become the top container port in Florida in 2007, Allen noted, and will probably rank 11th nationally, surpassing Miami in both lists.
