Port EvergladesÆ TEUs up 8.4% in 2006

Port Everglades Friday reported box volume of 864,030 TEUs in 2006, up 8.4 percent from 797,238 TEUs in 2005.

   The Florida port's containerized cargo tonnage increased 12 percent to 5.68 million tons with revenue from container cargo up 5 percent to $25.4 million.

   'This is the third year in a row that Port Everglades has experienced double-digit increases and second year of record growth in containerized cargo,' said Port Director Phillip C. Allen. 'In the past four years, the port has added several new services and increased containerized cargo tonnage by more than 2.2 million tons annually.'

   Three new container services from the Central America and Caribbean regions as well as a new service from the Mediterranean saw an extra 200 vessels call at the port, although its total cargo tonnage was flat at 27 million tons.

   Breakbulk cargo was up 31.4 percent in 2006 to 344,528 tons while dry bulk increased 3.7 percent to 2.95 million tons. Petroleum throughput decreased by 4.2 percent to 123,479,901 barrels.
