Port of Antwerp sees 16% TEU growth after 9 months
Container volumes at the Port of Antwerp increased 15.9 percent to 6.1 million TEUs during the first nine months of 2007. Containerized tonnage for the period improved 16.9 percent to 70.5 million tons.
One of the main drivers of the box rise at the Belgian port was a doubling of use of the Deurganck tidal dock, which reached 1.1 million TEUs.
Total tonnage handled at Antwerp in the nine months was 134.7 million tons, up 8.4 percent year-on-year. Bulk volume declined 3.8 percent to 45.9 million tons but conventional/breakbulk cargo rose 11.7 percent to just under 15 million tons, and roll-on/roll-off freight grew 16.7 percent to 3.3 million tons.
The number of seagoing ships calling at the port after three quarters increased 5.5 percent to 12,416.
