Port of Brownsville completes dock expansion

The project adds capacity for the South Texas port as it competes against U.S. and Mexican ports in the Gulf.    The Port of Brownsville, Texas, on Friday held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a 600-foot marine cargo dock and storage yard.
   The $27.5 million project increases cargo capacity to better compete with ports in the Gulf region and is expected to improve port efficiency.
   The federal government contributed $12 million toward construction cost with a Transportation Department TIGER grant last year. The port paid for road, lighting and other improvements.
   Maritime Administer Paul “Chip” Jaenichen, who attended the event, said in a statement that the new dock will “help the Port of Brownsville keep American exports flowing smoothly to foreign markets, while delivering jobs and spurring economic growth for South Texas business and communities.”
