PORT OF FELIXSTOWE TO ADD 1.5 MILLION TEU IN CAPACITY    The port of Felixstowe, the largest container port in the United Kingdom, has announced plans to add 1.5 million TEUs in annual container handling capacity.
   Following the decision of operator P&O North Sea Ferries to withdraw its roll-on/roll-off operations from Felixstowe, the port plans to convert the former ro/ro terminal into container facilities.
   “The expansion announced today will be in addition to the Trinity Terminal extension that recently received permission from government,” Port of Felixstowe said.
   The redevelopment will increase the quay length available for container handling by nearly 1,000 meters. The extended quay will be equipped to handle the latest generation of container vessels.
   In future, Felixstowe will provide a total of nearly four kilometers of deep- water container facilities. Total capacity at the port will increase by 1.5 million TEUs, to 5.2 million TEUs a year.
   “There is a well recognized need for more container terminal capacity in the U.K., and it is extremely fortunate that a new opportunity to develop these facilities has arisen now,” said Richard Pearson, managing director of the Port of Felixstowe Ltd.
