During the year, the Port of Koper exceeded the milestone of handling 700,000 TEUs and total throughput has been the largest in the history of the port, Port of Koper Management Board President Dragomir Matić said.
The Port of Koper saw several upgrades during the year, including the deepening of the container terminal’s seabed to 15 meters, and orders were placed for new cranes and other machinery. In addition, the port began to build three new tracks and extend its existing two tracks.
In 2016, the Port of Koper expects cargo throughput to jump 4 percent year-over-year to 21.4 million tons. Cargo volumes are projected to increase for all commodity types, especially cars.
The container terminal is also expected to see growth as a result of port infrastructure investments. The port said the majority of its planned investments in 2016 will be dedicated to the container business.
The Port of Koper is also investing in other terminals.
The construction of three reservoirs for liquid cargo is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
In addition, the port’s Supervisory Board approved of the construction of a 16,000-square-meter multipurpose closed warehouse on Pier II, which will serve the needs of the general and dry bulk cargo terminals and new equipment acquired by the port. An existing berth will be upgraded and a new berth will be constructed on the south part of Pier II, which will serve the need for more terminals.
The Port of Koper was established in 1957 and currently features 12 specialized terminals.
