Loaded container imports at the Southern California port grew 8.3 percent to 372,040 TEUs for the month, while loaded exports increased 9.4 percent to 157,661 TEUs compared with April 2016. Total empty container volumes totaled 185,053 TEUs, a 9.8 percent year-over-year increase.
By comparison, the neighboring Port of Long Beach saw container cargo volumes jump 16.5 percent year-over-year to 558,014 TEUs in April.
Through the first four months of 2017, cargo volumes are up 10 percent at the Port of Los Angeles compared with the same 2016 period.
“April was the first month of new vessel alliance deployments around the globe, and we are pleased that the Port of Los Angeles provided world-class service and efficiency at our terminals,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “We continue to seek new ways to improve operations, such as our new partnership with GE Transportation that will allow data access to our stakeholders that has never been seen before in our industry.”
The Port of Los Angeles announced its partnership with GE Transportation late last year with the goal to improve data-flow for stakeholders to plan for and serve ultra-large containerships.
