PORT OF LOS ANGELES VOLUME GROWTH CONTINUES IN JULY

   The port of Los Angeles' container volumes improved 9.7 percent in July, to 495,690 TEUs, as strong peak-season cargoes continue to move.

   The port handled 344,551 loaded TEUs, up 5.7 percent from July 2001. Inbound loaded containers improved 9.2 percent to 260,811 TEUs, while outbound volumes slipped 3.6 percent to 83,740 TEUs. Empties jumped 19.9 percent to 151,140 TEUs.

   Through the first seven months of 2002, total throughput has improved 17.4 percent to 3.33 million TEUs, an increase of nearly a half-million containers over the same period in 2001.
