Port of Los Angeles wins construction awards

The Southern California Chapter of the Construction Management Association gives the port two prizes for recently completed projects.    The Southern California Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) has named the Port of Los Angeles recipient of two Project Achievement Awards for recently completed port construction projects.
The CMAA hosts awards each year to recognize outstanding achievements in the practice of construction management.
The Berths 142-143 backland improvements project at the port won in the over $100 million transportation infrastructure category. The renovations involved construction of 15 automated stacking blocks and related infrastructure, with each block capable of operating two automated stacking cranes over 72 acres of container terminal backland. The project was part of phased development of the recently completed new TraPac Container Terminal.
Winning in the $11 million to $50 million transportation infrastructure category was the Port’s Berth 214-220 redevelopment project at the YTI container terminal. The project involved dredging, wharf improvements like landside rail cranes, Alternative Maritime Power® connections and other electrical work, as well as backland improvements, fire hydrant installations and utility removals. Port staff played a pivotal role in coordinating the phasing of project work to keep construction on schedule and costs down.
The mission of CMAA is to promote the construction management profession and the use of qualified construction managers on capital projects and programs. Its more than 15,000 members include individual practitioners, corporate members, public and private sector construction owners, along with academic and associate members. CMAA has 29 regional chapters as well as student chapters at colleges and universities across the country.
The awards were presented at the CMAA Southern California Chapter annual awards gala Thursday at the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
The Port of Los Angeles is America’s premier port and has a strong commitment to developing innovatively strategic and sustainable operations that benefit Southern California’s economy and quality of life. North America’s leading seaport by container volume and cargo value, the Port of Los Angeles facilitated $284 billion in trade during 2017.
