Port of Mobile dedicates new steel facility

The port handled over 5 million tons of steel in 2014.    Alabama Steel Terminals on Tuesday dedicated its new $36 million steel coil handling facility at the Port of Mobile. The facility, situated on an Alabama State Port Authority wharf with 40-foot water, has rail, truck and barge service.
   The Port of Mobile is the second-largest steel handling port in the United States, with just over 4.5 million tons handled in calendar year 2014, according to Commerce Department figures.
   The sophisticated facility boasts 178,200 square feet of covered bay area equipped with three 50-ton capacity overhead bridge cranes and 168,000 square feet of open storage yard with capacity for an estimated 700,000 tons of steel per year. At full build out, Alabama Steel Terminals will add 194,400 square feet of bay area equipped with three additional overhead bridge cranes.
   The project created an estimated 50 jobs at the U.S. Gulf port.
