Port of Portland abandons intermodal facility plans

The Port of Portland said Monday that due to community concerns and lack of market interest, the port won’t move forward with plans to develop an intermodal rail yard on a 700-acre property it purchased in 2004.

Dubbed the Reynolds Industrial Site, the southern part of the property will now most likely be developed as a large industrial park with a mix of manufacturing and distribution. The port said it expects development of the entire site may take more than 10 years.

In 2004, the Portland Port Commission approved the purchase of the industrial property, owned by Reynolds Metals Inc., with Reynolds having demolished an old plant and started an environmental cleanup of the site. The port will take possession of the property in early 2007.
