Port of Redwood City hit by construction slowdown

The Port of Redwood City, the only deepwater port in South San Francisco Bay, said that a slowdown in the construction industry contributed to its maritime business falling by 21.6 percent to 1.44 million metric tons in its fiscal year ended June 30.

The port said that its cargo volume for the 12 month period was still the fourth largest in its modern history, but was down from last year’s near record volume due to a significant decrease in imported cement from Asia.

The fiscal year saw 140 ships and barges call at Redwood City, down 11 from the prior year.
