Port of Savannah reports progress on terminal expansion    The Georgia Ports Authority, which manages the port of Savannah, has completed the first phase of plans to upgrade the pavement of a container facility and expand terminal gates.
   The completed pavement work at container berth 3 raises capacity by continuing the port’s plan to switch the terminal to a stacked operation. The first phase of capacity upgrade of gate 3 is also done, and the port authority expects to complete the project later this year, to increase the port of Savannah’s total gate capacity by 50 percent.
   Container berth 8, a new project at the port of Savannah, is also moving forward. The initial demolition of old structures and dredging of the berth area has been completed and construction of the new dock has begun.
   The Georgia Ports Authority reported it handled 12 percent more containers in May, when compared to the same month in 2003.
