Port of Savannah TEUs up 30% in August

The Georgia Ports Authority said Monday the Port of Savannah handled 236,020 TEUs in August, up 30.1 percent from the same month last year.

   For the first two months of the port authority's fiscal year, container tonnage is up 28.5 percent to 467,711 TEUs.

   The GPA also oversees another deepwater port, Brunswick, which specializes in handling breakbulk, agri-bulk and roll-on/roll-off cargoes, as well as the Bainbridge and Columbus inland barge terminals.

   Total tonnage growth in August was 26.9 percent, or 2.1 million tons, the port authority said.
