Port of Savannah upgrades container berth
The Georgia Ports Authority said an upgrade of Container Berth 2 in Savannah, which involved installation of 300 electrified refrigerated cargo racks, and electrification of ship-to-shore cranes had been completed. The port now has 17 electric cranes.
The $11.6 million project will increase capacity, improve efficiency and the environment, the port said.
The port said with the project’s completion it had completed a six-year effort to electrically power the port’s cranes.
In other news, the port said total tonnage in February was 18 percent or 300,000 tons higher than in February 2007.
