Port of Vancouver uses fuel additive to lower pollution

Port of Vancouver uses fuel additive to lower pollution    The Vancouver Port Authority said Thursday TSI Terminal Systems Inc. will use a fuel additive in its cargo handling equipment at the Canadian port’s Vanterm terminal to reduce harmful air emissions. VPA will also use the CombustAll additive in its fuel supply for its shore-based maintenance equipment.
The decisions follow a study made by the port authority, TSI, P&O Ports Canada Inc. and Catalyst Energy Inc. which indicated the fuel additive “significantly reduced particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide emissions and generated improvements in combustion efficiency,” VPA said.
In addition to its use of the fuel additive for its diesel-powered equipment at Vanterm, TSI has recently agreed to purchase two prototype low-emission rubber-tired gantry cranes for its Deltaport and Vanterm container terminals. The cranes will use technology similar to that of hybrid cars to reduce the amount of energy needed from the diesel engines.
The port of Vancouver is participating with U.S. West Coast ports and Canadian and U.S. regulatory agencies in the West Coast Diesel Emissions Reduction Collaborative program to seek solutions to reduce air emissions resulting from port operations.
The program is expected to announce similar projects and initiatives to reduce air emissions in California, Oregon and Washington.
