Portland auto volume down, tonnage up

   The Port of Portland said the number of automobiles moving through the port fell 53.1 percent in May to 9,155 units.

   For the year, auto volume is down 22.6 percent at 76,238 units. Overall tonnage at the port is up 4.9 percent in 2011 to 5.9 million tons.

   Breakbulk tonnage increased more than threefold in May, to 138,510 tons. For the year, breakbulk volume is up 22.8 percent to 501,812 tons.

   Container volume rose 4.3 percent in May to 16,583 TEUs and 20 percent for the year to 83,502 TEUs.

   Grain tonnage rose 14.3 percent in May to 466,903 tons, but was down 7.3 percent for the year at 1.9 million tons.
