Portland container, auto throughput falls in June

   Container volume at Oregon's Port of Portland fell 11.2 percent in June, to 13,320 TEUs, according to statistics released Thursday by the port.

   The dip in June runs counter to the port's 14.5 percent overall container volume growth in the first half of 2011, at 96,822 TEUs.

   Meanwhile, auto volume fell 40 percent in June, to 13,067 units, continuing a downward trend in 2011. For the year, auto volume is down 25.7 percent, to 89,305 units.

   Total cargo tonnage rose 26.4 percent during June, to 1.1 million tons, helped by a big spike in grain tonnage in June. For the year, total tonnage is up 7.8 percent, to 7 million tons.
