Ports America Group Purchases Bayonne port property

Ports America Group said Monday it has purchased a 153-acre site in Bayonne, N.J., for $90 million from the Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA).

Ports America said it would build and operate a “world-class automotive import and export facility” on the site. It plans to open it next summer.

The BLRA voted unanimously on Nov. 26 to sell the site to the Ports America Group.

But the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey filed a lawsuit against the BLRA on the same day, saying it was breaching an earlier “signed, approved, and recorded contract” to sell it the same tract.

The port authority has also named Ports America in that lawsuit, saying it and several other developers who had offered competing bids “knew there was a valid contract between the port authority and the BLRA, induced the BLRA to breach the contract by offering more money for the property than the port authority had contracted to pay.”

The lawsuit was filed in Superior Court of New Jersey in Hudson County.
