Jacksonville-based Physician Sales & Service (PSS) World Medical Inc., which imports more than 3,000 containers of medical supplies a year from Asia, is building a new warehouse and distribution center at the Westside Industrial Park in Jacksonville.

According to a report in the Florida Times Union, PSS will spend $3 million on a new, 168,500-square-foot warehouse. The company already has a 30,000-square-foot warehouse at Westside. The company anticipates sharply increased volumes from Asia in the next few years

David Smith, company president and chief executive officer, told the newspaper he anticipates the facility will be handling 11,000 containers a year within the next three to four years. The distribution center will feed customers east of Texas.

PSS brings its Asian cargo into Jacksonville from the Port of Savannah. Port of Jacksonville officials note, however, that extensive direct Asia services will be available by the end of 2008 when Japan's Mitsui O.S.K. Line starts calling at its new TraPac container terminal now under development at the port.
