PTP 2007 throughput up 14.6%

PTP 2007 throughput up 14.6% The Port of Tanjung Pelepas handled a record 5.5 million TEUs in 2007, a 14.6 percent rise over 2006, port Chief Executive Officer Harun Johari said Friday.
PTP, overwhelmingly a transshipment port in the southern coast of Malaysia, received four quay cranes and eight rubber-tire gantry cranes in 2007, he said in a beginning of the year statement.
Next up is deepening of an access channel.
“We are currently working together (with the Malaysian government) to further deepen the access channel' to the port, Johari said. “This, coupled with the planned construction of two new additional berths, will ensure PTP continues to provide the needed capacity and meet the high productivity levels demand by its customers.”
Johari also highlighted development of the neighboring PTP Free Zone, which has received $921 million through 2007.
“In 2007 we successfully attracted twice as many number of new customers compared to 2006,” Johari said. “We now have more than 50 global brands operating a diverse range of businesses within our Free Zone. To accommodate the growing interest of potential investors in our Free Zone, we are now actively developing additional land to meet the demand.'
